Teepees & Trails Through the Rockies - 11 Day

A true expedition, take on two of Canada's major cities, Calgary and Banff, as well as one of Southwest Canada's gems, Castle Wildland Provincial Park, on this cowboy-inspired tour.

Tour Description

There has never been a way to get more in touch with nature than by immersing yourself in it. On this exciting tour, you do just that. Introduce yourself to the lovely country of Canada in Calgary, where you have one overnight to take in all the city amenities before heading up into the Rockies. It is on the second day that you set out into the wilderness for trail rides, campfire tales and a large dose of cowboy culture. Your basecamp for the trail ride will be in “Teepee Town,” which is situated on private land and is surrounded by stunning mountain vistas. You will be comfortable sleeping in the canvas teepees and tents each night and have access to plenty of hot water, showers, toilets and delicious food each morning and night after you return from the trails. During each day, professional tour guides lead you on customized horseback rides through the region. Wildlife, enchanting views and the peace and quiet of the Canadian Rockies make these rides truly special. Upon dismounting your horse for the final time, it is back to Calgary and then onto Banff for even more mountainous adventures before this wild ride comes to a close.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Calgary
Arrive in Calgary and settle into your hotel, which is conveniently located by the airport. Enjoy the day to explore the area on your own. Big Rock Brewery is a favorite place to grab a drink, and there are museums for every taste Downtown. Overnight Calgary.

Day 2 – Transfer to Camp / Trail Ride
The day begins early today, as a member of the Trail Riders team will arrive by 7:30 a.m. to register you and your party for this Western adventure. You will board the transport bus for its 8 a.m. departure and head out of the city towards the trailhead. Before arriving, the bus makes a quick detour for a stop at Bar U Ranch, a National Historic Site that boasts well-over 100 years of ranching history. Here, a 2-hour tour allows you to immerse yourself in the Western way of life. Lunch is included before you reboard the bus and make your way to the corral.

Perhaps the most important task of this trip lies ahead as you arrive at the corral: choosing your horse. You will be matched based on the information you gave at booking, and all your outdoor supplies will be loaded into the saddlebags. Do not worry, all your main luggage will arrive at camp ahead of you. It is a short 1-hour introductory ride to camp, and upon arrival, you will choose your tent or teepee and settle in for an evening of fantastic food and drinks and socializing around the fire. Overnight camp.

Days 3-6 – Trail Ride
After a peaceful night's rest in the wonderfully secluded wilderness, each day on the trail ride begins with a hearty breakfast in the dining tent at 8 a.m. The cook prepares a variety of offerings, and you can also warm your belly (and your soul) with coffee. After you finish eating, pack your picnic lunch, camera and binoculars, and get ready for a day of adventure. During each ride an emcee and a tour guide will wind you along horse trails, on which you are not likely to see anyone outside your group. Each day brings something new! From low valleys and blue lakes to mountain passes and glaciers, there is so much to see. Some of the places you might explore during your trail rides include:

  • Blue Lake
  • Hanging Valley
  • Gladstone Creek
  • Whitney Creek
  • The Castle Region

Each ride reached its destination by lunch at which time you may hop off your horse to hike around the area on foot, capture some pictures, take a nap or partake in whatever you would like to do! The journey back to Teepee Town starts in the early afternoon, and once back at camp, happy hours and four-course dinners keep the fun and comradery flowing into the night hours. Overnight Camp.

Day 7- Final Trail Ride and Transfer to Calgary
Instead of following your normal camp ritual this morning, you will also pack your duffle, so it can be transferred back ahead of you. Set out with your emcee and guide for one final ride and look at the magnificent scenery, then it is to the bus. You will be transferred back to your original Calgary hotel, and from here, the rest of the day is yours to rest or get reacquainted with the city. Overnight Calgary.

Day 8- Transfer from Calgary to Banff
It is back into the mountains today, but this time you will be in a comfortable hotel in the resort town of Banff. You will transfer from Calgary to this laid-back town, and upon checking in, you have ample free time to scope out the local amenities. There are pubs, boutiques and restaurants in the Downtown area and, of course, an abundance of natural sites to enjoy. Overnight Banff.

Day 9 – Explore Banff Tour including Gondola Ride
Take a guided bus tour through the towering mountains of Rundle, Tunnel, Cascade and Norquay while learning about the natural attractions of the wind-shaped hoodoos. Surprise Corner, along Tunnel Mountain Drive, delivers a breathtaking view of the valley without comparison. Experience an 8-minute gentle ride to the summit of Sulphur Mountain in a four-person, fully enclosed gondola. A spectacular view and picture-taking opportunity await you at the top of this 360-degree panoramic vantage of Bow Valley. Learn all about how these majestic mountains have shaped this unique community. Overnight Banff.

Day 10- Day in Banff & Cowboy Cookout
Enjoy a free morning and afternoon in Banff on your own. Stroll through the quaint resort town, photograph the stunning scenery, or explore Banff National Park. Next, enjoy a unique cowboy cookout trail ride and meal in the great outdoors on this authentic western excursion. Horseback riders travel along the trail at the base of Sulphur Mountain, and non-riders enjoy a scenic covered-wagon ride along the Bow River. Everyone meets up for a BBQ steak cookout at 3 Mile Cabin by the Sundance Canyon Trail. Overnight Banff.

Day 11- Transfer to Calgary Airport
Today your tour comes to a close as you transfer back to Calgary for your return flight home.
